Getting from the house down to the water shouldn't feel like a hazard. A steep, eroding slope with no clear path is one of the most common problems we run into on lake properties - and it's one of those things that only gets worse if you ignore it. Water, foot traffic, and freeze-thaw cycles all work against you over time.

Here's what we were working with: a significant grade change between the house and the shoreline, compacted and unstable soil, and no safe or clean way to get down to the water. We started with the dirt work - grading and shaping the slope so everything that went on top would have a solid foundation underneath it. That part isn't glamorous, but it's what makes everything else last.

From there, we set a boulder wall along the upper portion of the slope to hold the grade and keep soil where it belongs. Natural boulders like these are built for this kind of environment. They handle moisture, freeze cycles, and shoreline pressure without budging. We ran the wall along the contour of the property so it looks like it belongs there - not like something that was just dropped in.

The stone steps tie the whole thing together. They follow a natural, slightly curved path down the slope, which is intentional - it's easier on the grade and easier to walk. We finished the slope with erosion control matting and straw to protect the disturbed ground while everything settles in and establishes.

What you end up with is a shoreline setup that's functional, safe, and fits the character of the property. No guesswork on where to walk, no soil washing toward the water, and a boulder wall that will be there for decades. That's the goal on every lakefront job we take on.
